Stockport lies between the cosmopolitan City of Manchester and the beautiful countryside of the Derbyshire Peaks and the Cheshire Plains. For more than 700 years, Stockport Market, overlooked by 13th century St Mary's Church, has been an important centre of trade. In 1852 Stockport's Cheese Hall was built for the town's cheese and dairy market, followed by the covered market hall in 1861. When restored in the 1980s to its original Victorian splendour, complete with decorative iron and glass, it won a Civic Trust award. The market is held three times a week, including a flea market on Tuesdays. It is well known by bargain hunters as a place where you can track down everything from fresh produce to clothes, handbags and household knick-knacks at great value prices.
